ROSE DESTINY and STARTLE have proven their potential time and again, and here the melding of these 2 superb parents has produced a masterpiece of plant breeding. Not as large or as flamboyant as sib BLOODRAYNE, but this shimmering lacquered ruby red has proven a powerhouse‹an incomparable parent in our quest for the ultimate gold-edged bright red. Extremely showy due to its very bright color and an elaborate gold fringed edge which follows the deep piecrust ruffles up and down the petal edge and often exhibits multiple layers of fringe giving a "bunched up" exotic appearance to this striking daylily. 25 or more of these exotic blooms are borne to perfection on 4-way branched show scapes. The waxy lacquered finish is more than just show as SPARTAN WARRIOR holds in hottest sun and rain beads up on the petals like it would on a newly waxed Corvette. Furthermore SPARTAN WARRIOR is bestowing this valuable trait to its offspring, giving me even deep black-reds with heavy plastic-like substance. On seeing SPARTAN WARRIOR the first time I felt it was the culmination of my long quest for just such a flower, but now I can see it is just the beginning. I am blooming fabulous SPARTAN WARRIOR kids in every shade of red from softest rose, through scarlet and even near black, and an unusually high percentage of fringed edges ranging from 1/2" gold braids to HUGE white sharks teeth and several even have that elusive "green" tint. A true semi-evergreen, going fully underground some winters and remaining 6" high the next, but never any cold damage. Fertile both ways; pods require a bit of coaxing‹but are well worth the effort.
