SILVER SURFER (Benz)
tet 36" M. Dor. (Picotee Dream X Tetra Barbara Mitchell) My best white to date. I have been hybridizing for the ultimate "white" daylily for over 20 years. It has been nearly impossible to incorporate the color of JOAN SENIOR or GENTLE SHEPHERD into a modern fancy ruffled tetraploid. Oscie Whatley once likened this quest to starting a car on a freezing morning, "Every now and then, it starts to turn over just enough to keep you from getting discouraged SILVER SURFER combines every single attribute I've sought in one flower. It's large at a full 6", very heavy substanced from 2 conversions, and displayed on a fabulous plant. These big blooms are ivory-white, but after a day in the full sun are almost snow-white. Round and beautifully ruffled, with huge looping ruffles, SILVER SURFER opens extremely flat and extremely early with sepals recurving out of sight despite very heavy waxy substance. Forms huge arching blue-green dormant plants, with straight strong 4-way branched scapes and over 35 buds. Fertile both ways and has produced seedlings with blooms even larger and more ruffled that are even closer to WHITE! Crossed to Stamile's near-whites, like KEY LIME ICE, this produced dormant plants with incredible branching and big gold edges all around. SILVER SURFER appears to be one of those "magic" parents, and I will even take it to other colors this summer. Wonderfully fragrant and a standout in the midsummer garden.  FALL ONLY     $200.00
