![]() ![]() ROUGH RIDER (Benz)
tet 26" M. Sev (Ultimate Weapon X seedling# 0208)
In a garden replete with gold-edged lavenders and pinks, this remains a standout and a visitor favorite. Pollen parent is Kaskel's #0208, presumed by many to be a full sib to his #127 "Best Edge." They bloomed the same year and Matthew insisted #0208, a 7" clear lavender with a 1/2" gold braided edge and a 4-way branched 30" tall scape was the superior cultivar. ROUGH RIDER is a full 6"- 6 1/2", with ultra-wide 3 1/2 to 3 3/4inch petals and boasts a brilliant gold edge over 3/4 of an inch when established. Color is a gorgeous deep violet-purple, and throat is soft lime green. A wonderful garden subject with strong 4-way branched scapes and 25 buds. Still, I was on the fence about introducing this daylily for a couple of reasons. First, as the pictures show ROUGH RIDER is not the symmetrical form I prefer. Also, it is too short, with lower side branches blooming almost in the leaves. Still, this is an extremely powerful grower and always re-blooms here, with re-bloom scapes about a foot taller than the primary scapes. Then there is the fact that every hybridizer asked about it, and offered to purchase it should I not introduce it. And last, but not least it's proven a mighty parent here for gold edged daylilies with wonderful vigor and overall plant habit.
