LAST SAMURAI (Benz)
tet 36" M. Dor. (Ruby Laser X Pink Fantasia)
I have long sought a bright red tetraploid version of BARBARA MITCHELL, and with this flower I have achieved that goal and then some. Extreme ruffling, ultra-wide form and beautiful red color combine to make this the superstar in our line of "state-of-the-art" red tetraploids. LAST SAMURAI is simply the widest and most heavily ruffled red daylily we have encountered, tet OR dip. These 5" velvety crimson-red blooms are so oversquare that the first blooms occasionally open less than perfectly flat. Bottom pic shows that. Blooms are a beautiful clear crimson red with a lime green throat that holds. Plants are very vigorous blue-green Northern dormant and tall well-branched scapes display about 25 of these ruffled beauties up and out for a magnificent display in a mature clump. I have worked for 20 years to achieve just such a flower, and its first kids show we have just scratched the surface of its potential. I have selected reds in all shades from dark bing cherry to brilliant scarlet and many that are even flatter and more ruffled than parent LAST SAMURAI. Easy parent both ways.
